Spring Deck Cleaning Checklist

As the weather warms up, spring is the perfect time to give your deck some attention. Winter conditions (snow, ice, moisture, and debris) can leave decks looking dirty and can also cause small maintenance issues that worsen over time. A little seasonal care can help protect your investment and keep your outdoor space ready for relaxing and entertaining. Whether your deck is built with pressure-treated wood or composite decking, this simple spring cleaning checklist can help you get it ready for the season.

STEP 1: Inspect the Deck for Winter Wear

Before you begin cleaning, take a few minutes to carefully inspect your deck. Winter weather can loosen hardware or cause minor structural issues that are easier to fix early.

Look for:

  • Loose or raised boards
  • Wobbly railings or steps
  • Nails or screws that have backed out
  • Cracks or splintering in wood boards

For composite decks, also check for any boards that may have shifted or fasteners that need adjustment. Catching these issues early helps prevent larger repairs later. If you notice any damage, contact the Easter team to discuss needed repairs.

STEP 2: Sweep and Clear Debris

Leaves, dirt, and organic debris often accumulate over the winter months. Removing this buildup is one of the easiest and most effective maintenance steps you can take.

Be sure to sweep the entire deck surface, clear debris between deck boards, and remove leaves trapped under railings or stairs. Debris that sits on the deck surface traps moisture, which can lead to mold growth or staining.

STEP 3: Wash the Deck Surface

Once debris has been removed, give the deck a thorough wash to remove dirt, pollen, and winter residue. Mix warm water with mild dish soap and use a soft deck brush or broom to scrub the boards. Always scrub in the direction of the boards to avoid damaging the surface. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose.

This method is safe for both wood and composite decking. Pressure washers can be effective but should be used with caution. If you choose to pressure wash:

  • Use a low-pressure setting
  • Keep the nozzle at least 12–18 inches away from the boards
  • Move the spray evenly across the surface

Too much pressure can damage wood fibers or leave marks on composite boards.

STEP 4: Address Stains, Mold, and Mildew

Shaded areas of decks sometimes develop mildew or algae, especially after a damp winter. If you notice discoloration, use a deck cleaner or a vinegar-and-water solution. Scrub lightly with a soft brush and rinse well to remove any residue. Avoid harsh chemicals or chlorine bleach, which may damage the finish.

STEP 5: Evaluate Protection on Wood Decks

Wood decks require sealant protection. As a final step to your spring cleaning, it’s a good idea to evaluate the surface of your deck to determine if a new coat is needed. Watch for faded or graying wood, rough or dry surfaces, and areas where water is soaking into boards instead of beading up on the surface. Applying a fresh stain or sealant every few years helps protect wood from moisture, sunlight, and seasonal weather changes.

With just a little attention each spring, you can extend the life of your deck and keep it looking great throughout the outdoor season. Regular cleaning not only improves appearance. It also helps prevent long-term damage and ensures your deck remains a safe, comfortable place to enjoy time outside.
